A purple 3rd Generation Worker Half-Length Dart.
A half-length dart, or a half dart, is a type of dart ammunition.
Details[]
As their name suggests, half-length darts are about half the size of a normal-length dart - about 36mm long.
Due to their size, half darts are only compatible with certain dart blasters. Generally, this includes closed-breech spring-powered blasters, such as those released under the Dart Zone Pro series.
Half-length darts can be created by cutting down existing darts to the specific length, but this is not a reliable way of obtaining them. Two half-length darts can be created from a single full-length dart, if a spare dart head is available.
Advantages[]
The difference in size for half-length darts brings a few advantages for using them over full-length darts. Due to being shorter, they have lower rotational inertia around their center of mass, making them less prone to fishtailing and more accurate at high velocities.[citation needed] They also have less drag in compression barrels, since less of the dart body comes into contact with the walls of the barrel.
The decrease in size also allows one to carry more half-length darts on their person than full-length darts.
Disadvantages[]
Likewise, there are also some disadvantages to half-length darts. Flywheel-powered blasters are only compatible if the pusher mechanism is modified or replaced to work with them. Similarly, there is less contact with half darts and the flywheels themselves, as compared to a full-length dart.
Half-length darts can also be easy to lose, and may serve as a choking hazard for young children or animals.
History[]
Half-length darts were originally only available as homemade ammunition; the most popular form of this would be the Stefan, which was popular in the modding community in the early 2000s. The term Stefan is also commonly used to refer to half-length darts.
As third-party ammunition began to be easily accessible for purchase online, half-length darts grew in popularity. The first retail-purchasable half-length dart was the Dart Zone Pro Half-Length Dart, for use with Dart Zone Pro blasters. In 2023, Nerf finally adopted the half-length dart standard with their AccuStrike Half-Length Dart.
